WHAT HAPPENS AT A GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
General membership meetings are important in that; decisions are made that can directly involve you the member, and are made based on the attendance to each meeting. If attendance is low, it can mean that decisions involving how your membership dues are spent are decided by a select few. All money paid out by the Local Union from its treasury must be approved by the members at a Local Union Meeting.
All meetings are generally structured in the following manner. First, the meeting is called to order. Next, there is a roll call of officers by the Recording Secretary and the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting. After the minutes have been read by the Recording Secretary a motion must be made and seconded that the minutes be “approved” as read. Such a motion means that in the opinion of the members, the Secretary has recorded the minutes of the previous meeting correctly. Should the reading reveal any errors or omissions, a member may move to correct the minutes. If this motion is carried, another motion should follow that the minutes, “as corrected” now be approved. The Recording Secretary continues with the reading of communications, letters which require attention. If no action is required or desired, the communications may be read and upon a motion, filed. The Recording Secretary keeps the files of the Local Union.
The members then receive a report from the Officers. The Financial Secretary should make a detailed financial report covering the receipts and expenditures of all funds of the Local Union. The Treasurer should report to each meeting the money received from all sources. The Treasurer should be certain that the amount reported by the Financial Secretary to the Local Union as having been turned over agrees with what the Treasurer actually received and that the Recording Secretary records the amount in the minutes. The Trustees shall audit the books and financial records of the Local Union every three months and give a report of such audit at the next regular Local Union meeting.
Following this, there is a report of the Organizer or International Representative, initiation of new members, reports of special committees, and reports of standing (or permanent) committees as our Grievance Committee. We then continue with unfinished business, matters remaining over from previous meetings, they are usually recorded in the minutes of the previous meeting. Next are any matters or new business, which have been laid aside earlier in the meeting or which have come up since the last meeting.
We then move along to good and welfare, they are simply matters of information and education.
The meeting is then adjourned by the President
